The Sarasota Polo Club

The Sarasota Polo Club (Web Design, 2006)
Graphic Design

Black is an extremely difficult color to use effectively in web design. I blame the early net-savvy geek culture for overusing the concept of darkness for the sake of darkness, basically labeling the very idea of a black background as amateurish even before most people had discovered their first URL. Hey, I'll come right out and admit to being one of the many responsible for this tragedy. For the Sarasota Polo Club's new design, I aimed to overcome that stereotype and use black effectively in a corporate web setting. Although I did so limitedly, (in just the header and the footer) I think the overall result is a success. The use of a deep red and a bright gold really enrich the entire section, and the tiny hint of a grey glare at the bottom gives it just enough three-dimensionality to pull the concept off. I really liked the tilted-cover approach I took with the Polo Magazine, meant to be featured in a high-profile slot on the home page, too.

Ultimately, the Club decided to use their magazine designer for the final site, to maintain a consistent approach with the direction taken by the rest of their marketing. This site was designed during my tenure as Art Director for GravityFree Web Design.
